Veterinarians

Dr. Kara Ballenger	I grew up in the Northland and went to Park Hill High School. I started working for a veterinary hospital when I was 16 years old. Following high school, I attended the University of Missouri in Columbia with intentions of becoming a veterinarian. There, I initially studied Animal Science and then was accepted to the College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, while in college, I frequently traveled overseas. I took several trips to Singapore and recently visited England as well.I started working at Eagle Animal Hospital in May 2006. Later that spring I married my husband, Mike. He is currently attending the UMKC School of Pharmacy and will graduate in 2008. Our children include three cats, BB, Tanzey, and Bailey, and one dog, Kingsley. One of my hobbies is running. I finished two half-marathons this past summer, including the LaSalle Bank Chicago Distance Classic and the Waddell and Reed Kansas City Half Marathon.
Dr. Scott Read	I grew up in St. Joseph, MO and attended Savannah High School. I graduated from Missouri Western State University in 1997 with a biology major and minor in chemistry. I worked at a veterinary clinic in St. Joseph since I was 16 years old. I graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 2001. I then went back to work at the same clinic for five years before starting at Eagle in August 2006. I am married and have two sons and a daughter. We have four dogs and two cats. I enjoy spending time with my family and attending school events.
Dr. Matthew Silvius	I was raised in Lathrop, Mo which is just north of Kansas City. I started working in the field of veterinary medicine as a kennel assistant at Eagle Animal Hospital while attending Missouri Western University. Once I obtained my undergraduate degree in Biology, I began pursuing my goal to be a veterinarian. I graduated from the University Of Missouri, College Of Veterinary Medicine.While in veterinary school, I met my beautiful fiancé. We were married in May 2007. She is also a veterinarian. At the moment we have 1 cat named Jade. In my free time I enjoy the outdoors, skiing, and fishing. I am also a fanatic fan of Mizzou and Kansas City sports.
Dr. James Sparks	I was born and raised in the Northland, and graduated from Park Hill High School. I joined Eagle Animal Hospital at the age of 15, and continued as a member of the support staff until going away to college. The University of Missouri became “home” until I graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990. I have practiced at Eagle since graduation and now enjoy the ownership role. My wife, Beth, and I are very proud parents of our 3 children, Patrick, Sean, and Cara. My hobbies include golf and fishing, but most of my time away from the office is dedicated to enjoying my family which includes our pets.
